FALI was officially
incorporated in 1994 with the express goal of uniting the PI industry in
Florida under one unifying association. This
was a direct result of the Florida Services Tax that was levied on many
professions. While others were unified and able to get the tax on their
profession repealed, the PI profession wasn't as lucky. We have been
fighting for the profession ever since. The
FALI Legislative Committee works year-round on issues that protect our
profession. Each Legislative Session the FALI Team goes to Tallahassee
to meet with our Legislators to discuss the issues important to our
profession.
Our
day in Tallahassee started out with a briefing at Cynergy's new
offices. We discussed the plans for the day and strategy for our visits
with the Legislators.
Representative Dan Daly remembered our team from last yearand shared his support of HB 205.
After
several meetings on the Hill, the Team took a lunch break and then
participated in NCISS' Legislative Advisory Board Meeting on Zoom. This
gave our Team, including our lobbyists, a chance to hear about issues
being monitored on a federal level as well as state legislatures around
the country.
Included in the afternoon meetings were visits to our Senate sponsor Senator Ana Maria Rodriguez as well as Representative Michael Caruso
who has been a champion for this legislation for several years and is
ready to help us with our next issue. Following the day on the Hill,
Panhandle/Tallahassee Area Director Jim White hosted a dinner meeting
with Tallahassee Area meetings.
Day
2 in Tallahassee was only scheduled to be a meeting with the new
Division of Licensing Director and Assistant Director. However, our
House Bill, HB 205, sponsored by Representative Peggy Gossett-Seidman
ended up being scheduled for an 8am meeting of the Ways and Means
Committee. Our Team was in the room during the Bill presentation and
President Dan Riemer was able to submit a form in support on behalf of
FALI. The Bill passed unanimously. Click the picture on the right to
view the video of the hearing.
Following the passage of HB 205 the Team met with Rep. Gossett-Seidman. Not
only was she excited to have passed this Bill out of its first
Committee, but she was also excited to see her friend Dan Riemer who she
had not seen in decades. This was a great way to leave the Capital!
Our
hosts at the Division of Licensing were very understanding about our
tardiness due to the Committee meeting. We spent over an hour getting to
know new Director Steve Garner and new Assistant Director Stephen
Benton. Also in attendance were John Raymaker
, Chief of Bureau of
Regulation & Enforcement and Karen Hansford, Chief of the Bureau of
License Issuance.
Reminder: There is still time to join us for this year's FALI Conference. The last day for Early Bird registration is April 10th.
