Privacy for PI Agency Owners

Under Florida Statute 493, all Class C and CC private investigators personal information--including home address--is protected from public disclosure.  This has not been the case for Class A private investigative agency license holders.   Many Class A licensed agencies are owned by C and CC investigators who work from their home offices, as opposed to a brick and mortar office, and these home agency office addresses have been listed on the DOL web site and are, therefore, available to the general public.

Soon this will be changed.

Earlier this year, FALI began a discussion with the DOL with an eye towards changing this policy and protect our home based members.  The DOL has now stated that the agency physical address will be removed from the DOL's website and only a mailing address will be displayed.

The easiest way to protect yourself, assuming that you don't want your home address to be publicized,  is to acquire either a post office box or a private mail box from one of the available commercial vendors, such as the UPS Store, Mailboxes, ETC.

We are hopeful that this change will take place in early 2014.

Remember, too, that the DOL legislative bill for 2013-2014 will also contain the FALI suggestion to permit private investigators who hold a Class G Statewide Firearms License, to carry .40 S&W and .45 ACP caliber weapons in addition to .380, .38 Special, and 9mm.

Remember that your FALI leadership is always working hard to represent and protect Florida private investigators.  We value your membership and your suggestions.  Thanks for being a FALI member.
