ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Mc Nelly Torres is an award-winning investigative journalist and the associate director and reporter for FCIR (Florida Center for Investigative Reporting -- the first bilingual investigative startup) which focuses on state government issues. Additionally, Torres is a board member for the Investigative Reporters and Editors organization and Florida Society of News Editors.  Her consumer watchdog stories at the Sun-Sentinel have won state, regional and national awards.  Special award winning reports can be seen here: http://fcir.org/special-reports/.    Ms. Torres  is also involved with the First Amendment Foundation, among other organizations.

Over the years, her work at five different newspapers has sent crooks to jail and changed laws.  She'd uncovered bribery on a Texas school board, deception among South Carolina environmental regulators, and failure in Oklahoma homicide investigations, among other discoveries.  Most recently Torres was the stimulus team leader for EdMoney.org. Torres covered education at the San Antonio Express-News in Texas where her work contributed to the conviction of a school building architect.

ABOUT THE TOPIC:

Ms. Torres will discuss using data analysis, aside from paper records, to build investigations.  Additionally she will share her involvement with First Amendment Foundation, which monitors legislation that threatens our access to information and is working to ensure we have access to public records and.  She will also talk about how the FCIR works with other Florida media outlets to build investigations.  Ms Torres will share how her job as a reporter led her to many investigations while covering cops/courts, education, government, environment, social and consumer issues.
