CEU Requirements

Continuing Education Units (CEU) Requirement:

Why Require Continuing Education?
The Florida Board of Certified Investigators (FBCI) was established in 1998 to encourage continuing education in the Private Investigation profession. The profession leaders were cognizant that many, if not all of the private investigators in Florida, have an original investigative knowledge base, either from an earlier career in law enforcement, college education or on the job training.

However, in today's world of public awareness of the actions of private investigators; the current political and societal alarm over invasion of privacy issues and errant investigative practices; the entire profession loses when an investigator's actions make the courtroom or the newspapers. Add to that the continuous changes brought on by the electronic age, the FBCI designation is even more relative today than when the program first began.

Therefore, constant education is necessary to protect ourselves, our agencies and our profession. If our clients, attorneys, corporations, human resource departments, insurance adjusters and so forth, all agree continuing education is important for them and their industries; then we need to have equal pride and concern for own profession.

The Requirements:
Maintaining the FBCI designation requires twenty-four (24) hours of continuing education training every two (2) years. It is recommended that training should fall among these four major continuing education categories: Professional Conduct and Ethics, Statutory Compliance, Investigative Legal Issues, and Investigative Techniques.

Some example of events that would qualify for CEUs:

FALI-U
FALI Boot Camp
FALI-U Lite
FALI Monthly Meetings

FALI Annual Conference
Conference and Seminars of PI Associations in Other States
Other Professional Related Training

Many FBCIs will also have other certifications with CEU requirements. The FBCI program recognizes the CEU credits of many certifying entities. All CEUs, unless they are FALI sponsored events, must receive pre-approval.

FALI 24 Hour FBCI CEU Requirements, and guidelines

  • Must be directly related to the PI Profession
  • Five (5) CEUs per CEU year* will be allowed for related online training,
regardless of how long that training may actually be.
  • One (1) CEU of the 24 must be in PI related Ethics
  • An FBCI may always submit more than 24 hours during their CEU period,
and are encouraged to do so, but they will count in the CEU year obtained.
  • Whenever possible, an FBCI should get pre-approvement for CEUs
so there will be no misunderstandings, or surprises, if the CEU is not acceptable.

*Note: The CEU year is based on the date the application is approved. The FBCI will be notified of their time frame when they receive their acceptance notice. However, the fee for remaining a CEU is payable every year no later than January 31st.
